How I Train My Clients
Every trainer has their own way of doing things. Most follow what they have been taught, or are biased by their favourite exercises, or what they enjoy in a session. I lean more on what the science says and select exercises to not only build strength and endurance, but activate muscles and teach you how to better engage more muscle fibres in order to quickly recruit more strength and learn how to better control your movements or held positions.
The forefront of my methodology is education. I won’t with any of my clients forever, so when that day comes, I want to make sure they leave with a sense of accomplishment, and the confidence to continue on their own! I want to teach you how you can move more effectively and what to do to make that happen.
It is a fact that most people are relatively inactive, or do not use every function or movement their body can do (or at least should be able to) on a regular basis. This is why I start from the ground up and test your mobility, and learn where you may have muscular imbalances that causes stiffness or instability in the joints. This is often reflected in a lack of mobility or coordination, as the body simply does not do what you want it to. And that’s ok. We all have to start somewhere, and it is my job to help unlock your body!
When I work with clients, I see it as my mission to allow them to do whatever it is that they want to do. If they want to be able to pick up their grandkids, to be able to get up off of the floor or run to the bus, or just keep themselves moving to live life to the fullest, that’s my goal too! If you want to be big and bulky, sure, but the majority of my clients are all about living and maintaining a healthier lifestyle, so that they enjoy life the way they deserve.
To me, that is Empowerment.
So how do I do this?
I use various stretches and exercises to help loosen stiff joints, and rebuild the strength around them to help create stability, and therefore give you more movement and more control over your body. Now, of course, this is a vague statement, but everyone is different, and that’s where the fun comes in for me.
What I do tend to consistently focus on though, is the posterior chain. This is the series of muscles that work together down the back of your body to both brace and support your torso and allow you to move effectively. By working these muscles it allows you to rebuild your posture, and learn how to bear load, meaning that you can lift and carry without as much stress on your back, spine, and anything else that might end up compensating for any weaknesses. This is all a long way of saying that I prioritise your legs and back in order to give you that solid frame; this is then better supported by a functional and reactive core (this does not mean lots of crunches, but don’t get me started on those haha). Lastly we work our arms, as these are typically the least contributing factor in supporting your physique, but also strength and power generation. Of course, they are still important, but you can’t have thick branches without a strong trunk and even stronger roots (not unless you want to shout “Timber!”).
Now, this is all well and good, but what if you have specific goals? What if you want to lose weight, or build strength in a particular movement?
Well, that’s great! It means that you know what you want and we can work with that. We can incorporate that into this plan, or replace it entirely. Some people want to do more cardio. Great. Some people want to build flexibility, or strength in their lifts. Perfect. Most people I see don’t tend to have a particular goal and keep their wants quite vague, but if you have an idea in mind or a style of training that you prefer, I will work with you in order to achieve that goal. At the end of the day, these are your sessions, and it has to be personal to you, otherwise, it’s not Personal Training.
